KeymasterPeople Can Fly, Epic Games and Electronic Arts, the companies behind the upcoming Bulletstorm first person shooter, have thought of a novel way of promoting the title, and released a free game, called Duty Calls, which parodies modern combat shooters, with Call of Duty receiving the biggest amount of cheeky insults.
Bulletstorm has been touted as a game changer in terms of first-person shooters, as the title wants to put an emphasis on having fun while gaming and killing the legions of enemies through a variety of imaginative ways.
Now, after plenty of videos that made fun of current shooters and games, which aren’t very entertaining, the three companies are taking things up a few levels by releasing a parody of Call of Duty, entitled, what else, Duty Calls.
The game is a free download, weighing in at 762 MB, but only lasts about five minutes.
Still, in that time, you’ll be able to encounter every first-person shooter troop imaginable, from invading an Eastern European secret base, to finding out that there’s a nuclear bomb in that facility and then saving the rest of the world through slow-motion plot points.
The briefing players receive is also focused on just the important stuff, as gamers hear the voice of a scruffy general saying, “Here’s your objective: blah blah blah… secret base. Blah blah blah… nuclear missle bomb. Blah blah blah… counting on you. Good luck.”
Epic Games lead designer Cliff Bleszinski already endorsed it through his Twitter account, saying that, “Wow. Blown away. This game will redefine military shooters for years to come.”
EA and Epic are hoping to avoid any lawsuits from Activision, as the website clearly states that “Duty Calls is a parody. It is not associated with Activision or the Call of Duty games.”
Despite this warning, the game uses the same font and various other graphical resources seen in the marketing of previous Call of Duty games like the most recent Black Ops or the Modern Warfare titles.
Duty Calls is available as a free download right here from Softpedia and these are the recommended system requirements.
OS: Windows XP SP2+, Windows Vista or Windows 7
Processor: 2.0+ GHZ Single Core Processor
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA 6200+ or ATI Radeon 9600+ Video Card
Sound: Windows Supported Sound Card
DirectX: DirectX 9.0c
Hard Disk Space: 8GB (Download: 759MB)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zErsacT5Xp0&feature=player_embedded
this is one hell of a fun game, totally worth the download for anyone who’s played Call of Duty or any other generic shooter like itFebruary 3, 2011 at 2:32 pm #98707Cowprobe
ParticipantThat was some good stuff.
I wish more parody games were made with such a level of polish.
Maybe that’s why I’m hoping Duke lives up to at least -some- of the 12 years of promises.

ParticipantGotta say, totally glad 2011 looks like it’s gonna steer away from the Military shooter clones for Duke Nukem clones instead 😛
okay that was slightly pessimistic, Duke Nukem clone is a hundred and infinity percent better step in the right direction. After playing Bullet Storm’s demo, tho, I don’t think the it’s going to last. Getting scored by how much of a novelty your kill is? Lame. At times I had to walk into danger-close and got owned simply because my headshots were getting “boring”. And then there was this one time I came to a catwalk with falls on both sides, I ran thru it kicking and throwing guys off of it (While shouting This is Sparta!), then I turned around and saw literally all of them just floating in the air for no reason. Totally killed the moment, made me so mad seeing them suspended in air all slackjawed and stupid that I almost wasted bullets shooting them (I walked away instead muttering sadly “This is not sparta”). Didn’t even get a good score when they floated down to their deaths a eon later.
Duty Calls, tho, is awesome I’m gonna be playing that five minutes worth of gold for hours!
