Hey guys!
I have an old growth sequence I commissioned years ago. At the time I had to choose between colors and content and went with content. The whole thing is thus black and white. I’m not sorry I did so, the sequence is awesome, but lately I was wondering what the sequence could look like with some colors added to it.
Now I used to be pretty good with a pen or with a brush, but that was before the days of digital drawing and coloring. Thus I know very little on how things are actually done in the modern artistic world.
So I’m looking for some digital coloring tool, something I can use on my PC, something fairly easy to use and most importantly, something free. I’m not looking to invest money into this, just time. It’s a simple side project, something to work on in the months to come.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks.

You are quite welcome! 🙂
I suggest getting the .psd plug-in for Paint.NET — that way you can save your files in a format that will be compatible so you should be able to open them in GIMP (and Photoshop) when you feel ready for it.
You should aim for using GIMP for most of your digital art since it is much more powerful and much more full featured.
Things you will want to learn in order are: layers, filters, and masking.
Layers should be the first thing you learn. They are the foundation upon which any project is built upon in this kind of software. I cannot put enough emphasis on you mastering layers first.
Paint.NET will have layers and filters, but I don’t recall if it can do masking.
GIMP will do all of the above and so much more.
Also, many people here use and even prefer GIMP including Lingster. I would be using it as my preferred digital art app too if not for being fortunate enough to have the commercial product Photoshop.
Also, when you are ready, you will find that there are an abundance of plug-ins for GIMP that will greatly expand it’s capabilities.
Good luck with your journey into digital art!

He will be better off graduating to using GIMP. GIMP is the powerhouse of this kind of software for people that are limited to free apps.
