The toughest part about writing something sometimes… is actually getting to work on it.

And I seem to have a MAJOR obstacle:  buttloads of free time for the Chinese New Year holiday. 

I keep telling myself that I have plenty of time to write, and I keep putting it off… until I've whittled my Spring Festival break away.

Any advice on how to get on task, and do it NOW?

Besides gblocks acurate coment, all I can say is : DO IT. Sit your ass on the chair infront of your computer ( I don't think you are using a tiping machine) and start. Take it from me. I've been free for almost a month (summer here), no classes nothing, and I have a bigger "to do" List than the one I had durring the hole year.
Just sit and start typing anything, after a few seconds, or sometimes minutes (lets hope they don't turn into hours) you would have started something.

Free time managment is something they don't teach anywhere, but they should. One finds himself with a lot of free time and a lot of things to do, but ends up watching re-runs of Smallville, ER, or even the Nth version of Big Brother. Just put your ass infront of the machine and start.

I generally find that it can be easy to fritter away time when it comes to writing.

Personally, I'd say it depends what you're doing instead of writing. If you're sitting at your computer just messing around, well at least you're in front of the computer.

I'd say if it's maybe not knowing where to go with a story, just start with something that's fun – maybe a little Addventure stuff or just playing with some ideas. Then once you're warmed up, open up your story and just see how it goes.

Failing that, just ignore all that sit down and start mashing keys.

Any advice on how to get on task, and do it NOW?

As you can see from my post count, I'm a lurker, but I'm also a bit of a writer (I've got 23 pages of one story written right now, and I'm hoping to finish the first part so I can post it in serial fashion).  Usually, when I have trouble writing its one of two things –

1) I can't think of how to continue

2) I can't get started

Another thing I've observed is that the writing comes in spurts (maybe other writers experience this) some entire sections just leap out from the keyboard onto the page, while others have to be put together line by line.  I think this occurs because I just know what certain parts of the story are going to look like from the get-go.  I've got entire scenes in my head ready to go, the problem is just setting up the story to that point.

If you are like me (and maybe this isn't how everyone operates), do what I do: write them down!  If you know how your story is going to end – write the ending!  Right now!  If you know what a particular scene in your story is going to be – write it!

You'll (hopefully) end up with a few disjointed, but written, scenes that just need to be stitched together.  And once you get started it's a lot easier to get finished.
