This seemed to be an appropriate subforum, if it isn't then my apologies.
I was curious, in your stories what do you consider "average" for a human (male and female)to be capable of lifting? Also, does anyone know what the average woman/man in real life is able to achieve in each standard work out? (Curls, benchpress, leg press, etc. etc.)
June 8, 2008 at 3:35 am #715171st_TsurugiParticipantI don't remember too much, having not lifted weights seriously in years, but I recall in high school the average for a man was about 110-135lbs. for bench press (starting out, if they took weight training this would usually increase) where a woman could do between 45-75lbs. There was however, one girl at my school who could reportedly bench 205lbs. for reps. I knew her, but never saw her do that much. She did look strong enough; I once saw her bench about 185lbs. which at the time was the highest I could do for 2-3 reps. She was cute too 😉
June 8, 2008 at 9:07 pm #71518GWHHParticipantI don't know what the average is. But I think the averages the other fellow here quoted are a bit low. That may be for non-adults. I would hope adult (male) woudl be stronger than that. And what age group are we talking about? I mean the USA man be overweight and out of shape. But those numbers are kind low I think. But that a very good question and I will have to look into that!!

Thanks for the reply, I assume those are HS averages. That girl sounds like she was pretty hot =P I've done a little google searching (without much success), but from what I've seen some girls are doing 75ish like you said, while others are reporting to do close to 200… If you approximated, how much do you think that girl weighed? I'm curious as to if that's the missing link here, or if it's just sheer strength?
I believe those are high school student averages like he said, I'd kind of like to know the averages for all age groups (As I'm sure most of you would as well)
Also (just saw your second post), 50 push ups (assuming we mean real ones) is rather impressive for females from what I've gathered. I didn't see anything about weight lifting though. Does anyone have any more information?
June 8, 2008 at 10:12 pm #715211st_TsurugiParticipantWhen I was in 10th grade, I could barely bench 100lbs. By midway though 11th grade though, my average was around 165, which was close to what I weighed back then. Perhaps that was more due to bodily change rather than any development I caused? I do know that I wouldn't have been able to do that much without practice. I did know some girls who could bench as much as 115 though without training, so that might be nearer to the upper limit of what an average girl can do. Originally, I was thinking an average of 65 to 90lbs. for girls. But for some reason that didn't seem right.
As to this girl I knew, she was about 5'7, 5'8, and looked to have at least 20lbs on me, maybe 30, so we're talking 180, 190lbs. And she didn't really look fat at all. Just her ass 😉
June 12, 2008 at 9:42 am #71522MagnusMagnetoParticipantHmmm, perhaps weight is the missing link here? Although I have heard some girls who are lighter (probably around 140ish) claiming to benchpress 200? Maybe they are simply mistaken?
Again, anyone with statistics for both genders / age groups would be much appreciated.

I don't know much on this topic that has't already been stated, but I'd query whether a girl weighing 140 pounds is light. Did you mean lighter than 1st_Tsurugi's girl he remembers from school?
June 12, 2008 at 5:49 pm #715241st_TsurugiParticipant140lbs. typically is not light for a woman. I don't think it's impossible that a woman that weight could lift 200+lbs. Of course, that would be far from average, perhaps a bodybuilder, or some other athlete.
June 12, 2008 at 8:09 pm #71525Prophet TenebraeParticipantI'll tell you this – averages are probably the most over-rated statistical measure there is and have absolutely 0 value on their own. That's one of the first things anyone doing a stats module will learn – the first will most likely be that an hour of statistics can stretch into infinity.
What you really want to be looking at are the average (aka mean) and the standard deviation if you're interested in distribution trends. It will tell you faaaaar more.
Where you'd find that kind of information? Beats me… it's probably out there somewhere.
