ParticipantI'll tell you this – averages are probably the most over-rated statistical measure there is and have absolutely 0 value on their own. That's one of the first things anyone doing a stats module will learn – the first will most likely be that an hour of statistics can stretch into infinity.
What you really want to be looking at are the average (aka mean) and the standard deviation if you're interested in distribution trends. It will tell you faaaaar more.
Where you'd find that kind of information? Beats me… it's probably out there somewhere.
Yes, but he's not analysing data in a scientific fashion. All he's looking for is a ballpark idea of where the peak on that normal distribution lies.

ParticipantAn average is pretty meaningless if you don't know the SD. I mean, what if the SD is considerably larger for one gender? Or if it's just big, period? Sure, a ballpark figure is handy but if he's asking then surely he'll want to know the range etc.

Is statistical accuracy really that important when we're talking about setting realistic human strength levels for stories?

ParticipantI'm guessing if someone is asking the question then they're probably interested enough to know more than one not-very-telling number.
Besides, if someone comes up with an actual distribution – that's something we can all benefit from.
That said, I'm not expecting such a data set to turn up or the often outlandish numbers presented in stories to be marginalised even if it is.

ParticipantThanks scat! I particularly liked that second article.. If any guy I know says that women are weak, I'll show him that. Point is, a strong woman is strong for her size, period. There is a slight strength gap, but it is just that – SLIGHT.

ParticipantHmmm, thanks again everyone for your responses. This sheds quite a bit of light.
