I say again: people take him WAY too seriously.  He's been accused of thinking he's a driving god when I've read him when he's stated that, if a car slides on the road, he's so poor at controlling it that his instinct is to climb into the back seat and brace for impact.  He's freely admitted that cars he's tested and loved have turned out to be lemons.  If you want serious car reviews that include the time-worn road tester's favourite line "the controls are easy to use and fall readily to hand", then don't look to JC.

As for his US-bashing; he loved the US as a teenager and wanted to visit and do a road trip.  Then, in the early nineties he did and found that the reality was a let-down compared to his idealised view.  He found that, beneath the grinning "have a nice day" schmutter was a resentment of his Limey-ness and that the cars that he drooled over were great on a straight, smooth road but that they rolled and understeered when confronting a corner.  He also has bashed the Koreans, Malaysians, Welsh, French, Germans, Scots and many other nationalities.

I love his Top Gear stuff and he can't be a complete git, he's got the best US car ever made a Ford GT.

If you get BBC America Top Gear is on Monday evenings.

I need to watch more of him. I always find him terrifically entertaining. The recent Polar Challenge was hysterical.

Try watching some of the documentaries he has made, especially the ones on the Victoria Cross and St-Nazaire raid. They show a different side to his character.

The one about his late father-in-law as a VC hero was very moving indeed. 8)
