I read it twice just to make sure I understood your points. I agree with most, but disagree with some. First, you are giving the media too much credit. Who the hell listens to the media? Not me. They told you cig smoke was good for you years back, drugs that caused cancer were good for you, and still do all of that. They are just conveyers of information and information in the US is driven by CORPORATE INTERESTS and lobbyists in Washington who look out for them and pay pols money to defend their interests. That is how America’s capitalistic economy and political sysyem work. Right? The media sure is not keeping anyone thin. The obesity rate is up 53% iin FIFTEEN years…in what was already the fattest first world country in the world. It is going up in Europe too. Women and men are not sitting on the couch and listening to the media to stay thin. Just look at the incrwasing fats rates…especially amongst KIDS. Nuff said on that.
On the Hollywood thing….that is mainly roids in the US. They want to get away from it. The big miss many here make on roids is that it is a CRIME to have them in your posession. A felony and the penalties are getting stiffer. You can say that we should be free to take whatever we want. I get that and support it. We are free to take cocaine and many other illegal drugs. My point is…it is a major crime if you are caught…especially with a large amount and small amounts are not what bobybuilders take. They often are the dealers since it cuts their cost if they can sell some at a premium at the gym. My point is obvious….yes they are free to do it…and the police are free the throw them in jail. That was the point of my Canada comment. They have laws there….much less strict…and much less enorced. Huge reason to bodybuild there….and Toronto is now like LA and muscle beach used to be.
As far as Hollywood…it has been rejected by the males and females you mention for overuse of roids. Those are your consumers. It is a felony to use them. Why would Hollyood producers put an fbb in a movie…so the cops can visit the set. They are cracking down on roids big time. You see it at the gyms and I’m in the biggest market and visit the biggest gyms in the US. It has changed alot. Even the men are smaller. Less use, though there is some. You just need to be real careful. Is that worth it?
As far as guys and girls teasing you….I’ve had a few people bust me and nobody ever said a word. I was working hard then and again recently ( no roids), so they may have thought it was partly fitness interest, though some saw the fighting stuff too. Even my ex girl who was gorgeous. No biggie ….it is a fetish. I generally don’t get people saying much of anything to me. They just don’t. I look and smaller men look the other way. However, I do not advertise it. I have gone on many femuscle sites at work which they cetainly knew over years and not one person ever said a word to my face or was it notable to me when we hung out. Topic never came up…even real drunk.
I had some interesting experiences with muscle women….most women negative…and mixed with me. I could share that another time. I don’t go around and tell people I like strong women, but if I see one I check her out. Has happened many times out with other people…much less so recently At bars, in stores, and random sightings. The gym was the best spot of course. Many world classers there.
The big difference here is that roids are now taboo. Plain and simple. Not w/everyone, but with the unusing public , media, and law enforcement. Look at Barry Bonds and Clemens..two of the great US athletes ever are now laughing stock cheaters in the US. That says it all. Thier popularity is 50 times the biggest ever bodybuilder.
As far as gender sterootypes…they are changing…just slowly. There is an enormous difference between now at age 45 and when I was growing up. It happens slowly though.
The good news in all of this..is that girls on average are bigger, stronger, and more athletic than the early 90’s. Huge difference. If fbbing was still around in the same exact manner…it would be sick what we see now. Much better than what we got then.
We’d be going bonkers here if the young girls of today tried fbbing in the same volume and took some “gear” as they did in those days. The sport would be huge and the women would be better than ever. Trust me…I’ve ben a fan and very active around this for a long time. Now…if you guys are overseas….it seems to be different in some countries. This used to be the place and now it is changing. Girls do play other sports at previously unseen levels here…even lifting records are falling.
July 14, 2011 at 9:25 am #101973darkclaw91ParticipantYeah, I agree the rate of obesity is going up sadly. However, I meant that many people want to be what the media shows. Not that they actually do what is require to be what is in the media, or at least not all of them. I live in Canada but I do know a lot of men and women who want to be the “ideals” I talked about, and are bashed for being anything else…but that might be because I’m in college now. However, it is inappropiate to say everyone is like that, but out of the people I know…it is a substantial amount. On the other hand, on further reflection it is probably wrong for me to assume that by my own personal experience I can “categorize” others…so I won’t. I’m only going off of my own personal experiences with others.
I don’t know much about the roid issues and legalities in the US, so I’m not going to comment on that. However, I’ll take your word on the matter.
As for my experiences with people knowing my fetishes, I don’t really advertise them. However, I am far too trusting with some “close” friends and well…yeah. But I do see your point.
As for gender stereotypes, I hope all stereotypes stop. How do they help?
Though I don’t quite get what you mean by women being “bigger, stronger and more athletic”. I mean, I know quite a few big, strong, athletic women…because I work out a lot, so I go to places where they would be. But when I look at all the women I know, not many are that big or strong. I’m not trying to being insulting, I’m just saying most women I know do not work out or play sports passionately. However, I wouldn’t be complaining if they all decided to
End the wall of text.
July 14, 2011 at 11:43 am #101978ant1937ParticipantI’m sorry. I should have made that bigger, stronger, and more athletic remark to the time I was growing up. Title IX was passed in the US ad things changed. Older guys here know what that is. Women play much more sports and lift much more now than when I was a kid. The world bench press record was barely 200 in the late 70’s for women? Do I need to add more? There are thousands of women who can do that now…or maybe 1,000…..my guess is more.
You guys in Canada are a bit moreliberal, but much like England….the most similar to the US in cultural behavior. The laws and politics vary some….not drastically. Yes, roids are easier to get up in Canada….now. Not an issue 12 years back. The law was not enforced here and was not as harsh. If you follow baseball, then you know what that did to roid laws here.
Don’t know on the people or gender stuff. It has come a long ways here, but it still won’t disappear anytime soon. Men are…on average….bigger and stronger than women. That is a fact. They also behave differently. It is as genetic as it is society giving you gender roles. They’ve done studies on that. Young boys act differently than young girls. Gay kids have been shown to be different at a very young age. It is not society stereotyping the entire thing, though that probably plays a role as well.
It is much better now….I’m 45….than it was when I was born…and even worse for the guy who was 65…there are a few here. Ask them. No such thing as fbbs or female combat…except as kind of a joke…..other than real underground. It was condiered porn in the 50’s in some parts of the US if you had wrestling vids. Amazing, isn’t it?
July 14, 2011 at 11:46 am #101979ant1937ParticipantThe big problem with fbbs now is there really is nothing to aspire to other than the underground stuff. That has dropped interest. So has some of the gorls seeing other girls have awful side effects from roids. Roids and women in all of our contries were not much of an issue until the 80s’ and more early 90’s. Those were your guinea pigs for fbbs. There were no roids in 60’s and70’s fbbs. Look at them. Stick figures.
July 14, 2011 at 1:27 pm #101985GWHHParticipanti think she look like a young cindy phillips. cindy started lifting at age 16 and this one started at 15!!
July 14, 2011 at 11:28 pm #101996cpbell0033944ParticipantFYI, I’m not aware of any British BBers being targeted by the Police and Crown Prosecution Service for steroid use. I think they tend to take the view that the fight against hard drugs (heroin, crack cocaine etc.) is more important.
July 25, 2011 at 1:20 am #102258BodybyBaneParticipantSo we’ve all come to said agreement FBBers haven’t been televised since the late 90s
Okay,..I ask you this why hasnt Women’s Physique Division shows not been telelvised
You’re asking these Ladies to not go as HARD as THEY WANT becuz of risks THEY are well aware
Alright,..some have stopped,..Like Katka for example
Where’s ESPN for that shit
Better yet,..When is that grand prize money gonna increase?
All Bob Chicerillo &IFBB did is take away their ability to choose for themselvesJuly 28, 2011 at 10:48 am #102344ant1937ParticipantESPN does not cover the fitness girls or the men anymore either. The sport is just of no interest to viewers at this point. Not even me. I like the offseason fbbs…not the dehydtated contest look. I just miss all the shows they used to have on fbbs training. The net has taken that over now.
I don’t think we’ll ever see fbbs on TV again in competition and it does not matter what the drug policy is. The US is cracking down hard on roids. They are still available for sure. Just don’t be the one dealing them or you may go away for awhile. Lots of bodybuilders funded their own habit (just like other drug users) by buying in bulk and dealing them. That is risky biz these days in the US.
