I saw this over at The Process and thought that it was worth posting here, just because it's the kind of contemptuous bare faced kind of hackery that needs to be exposed.
Apparently Greg Land has had his wrist slapped over this… but of course, no one is getting fired, no one is getting sued.

Now, I can't really say much on this topic; for my new animation I have most certainly been tracing photographs of female body builders in order to get the anatomy right. But then again I am not a professional artist, I'm not selling my work and if I were in the comic industry I sure as hell wouldn't be tracing.
But since I do it for fun and to learn, I'll trace photographs and then try to do artwork without any photo inspiration. However, for this guy whose getting paid to create content.
That's just wrong for taking credit for someone else's work, Adam Hughes drew the original pictures and this David Mack simply lifted them unto his own almost as if he invented all the poses and moments that were in the comic!
That's just wrong, and if any of the photo references I used actually had names to give credit to I would always give credit on whom I created the artwork off of. Oh well, hopefully his thieving days are numbered.
March 29, 2008 at 1:30 am #69052LingsterKeymasterI'm withholding judgment on this. I noticed that the Maya character greatly resembled Adam Hughes' Sarah Rainmaker, but I didn't realize Mack had borrowed much of the "Ordinary Heroes" art. It almost seems like Mack was doing this more as a homage because why else steal from only one issue? It's really up to Hughes to make the call on this matter.

I'm glad you mentioned Greg Land. The man has swiped and copied more than an ATM and a xerox put together…

It's funny-I noticed the resemblance to Hughes' version of Sarah but really didn't think it was a swipe. What's really ironic is that David Mack created Echo/Maya. Why would he feel the need to swipe art to draw a character he created? If anything, he should've swiped Joe Quesada's version of Echo/Maya.

Well… at least Mack has good taste.
