WHO GIVES A FUCK?!
I've watched people die of cancer and it was both more satisfying, interesting and a better use of my time.
Anyone want to spew patriotism about how people running a thousandth of a second faster than they did last year is somehow inspirational? Because I'm fucking ready for you.

Are you kidding?
I can give you a few reasons to watch the olympics…
– female swimmers
– female javelin throwers
– female weightlifters
– female short distance runners
– female platform and trampoline divers
– female gymnastics
– etc…August 8, 2008 at 11:27 pm #74413Prophet TenebraeParticipantEh, if I cared about the athletes? I'd just check stuff online – I wouldn't expose myself the boredom first hand.
I've got better things to do… and I live on the Internet… between various things.
August 8, 2008 at 11:45 pm #74414alexParticipantDude, over a billion people watch the olympics, rooting for their country in a large variety of sports.
What's your point? Sports are stupid? Patriotism is stupid?August 9, 2008 at 3:46 am #74415DevonCoryParticipantWHO GIVES A FUCK?!
Honestly Prophet, I've seen you post more thoughtful and constructive comments in the past. As Alex said, what's your point? You don't like the Olympics? Fine. But I'm sure that there's a few thousand athletes who bust their ass 5 hours a day, six days a week who would disagree with you. You don't feel that the whole event deserve your respect, that's ok, but at least show some respect for the athletes and for those people who work hard to make this event a success.
August 10, 2008 at 12:33 am #74416Michael PouliotParticipantThe whole event isn't deserving of anyone's respect. It cannot be attacked enough. The perpetuation of nation state worship makes me ill. "My country is better than your country!" BAH…
Even worse this year is the gross spectacle that was the opening ceremony. I caught a few minutes of it, and the fawning over it by the NBC announcers almost made me physically ill. Yeah, it's easy to expend 10x more on a ceremony then Athens did when you're a totalitarian state whose subjects have no real say.
And then of course there's the whole "natural athlete" charade, with swimmers in $632 swimsuits. What a joke.

Oh yah. I saw a few of those at the Olympics already. Obviously now, the swimmers performances have nothing to do with hard work and dedication. I was actually thinking about buying one of those and win a bunch of gold medals at the next Olympics.
[/sarcasm]Again: Guys, if you don't like it, that's fine. But be respectful of the athletes.

[/quote]Prophet would probably call those people, at least the ones who didn't win gold, "idiots". And I would agree with him ;D
August 14, 2008 at 3:23 pm #74419cpbell0033944ParticipantWow! Polarised views or what!? 😮 ::)
I don't think the Olympic spirit is that of rampant nationalism (it was in Berlin's Games of 1936, but that's a different matter). Yes, there are always going to be drug cheats, but the true spirit is that of competing, of measuring yourself against others and trying to improve your performance. Citius, altius, fortius, remember?

Really? If you frequent these forums, I guess it means you like female muscles. So according to your logic, all the ladies who spend 20 hours a week in the gym, training and building their bodies, are idiots too? Unless they win the Olympia of course, then they're all right… right?
Sorry, but I don't 'get' this kind of attitude. I train hard and I've been doing so for years. I'm also a personal trainer, so I know a bit about the discipline, the dedication and the sacrifices needed to achieve any kind of success in sports. It's friggin' hard.
There's plenty of idiots in this world. People who strive for greater level of achievements are not amongst them.
