Optical Illusion Experiment in my Deviant Art Gallery.

Optical illusion experiment with Couple Girl 02.

If you look up images that are optical illusions, there are ones that manage to trick the eye into perceiving movement even when there isn’t any. This is an experiment to see if the same effect would happen to an actual line art image of a person.

Movement is supposed to appear to go in the direction of the white edge of the wedges. I tried to make the background expand away from the body like waves of energy. I also tried to make her chest appear to expand with her breathing, her muscles to throb, and her waist and hips to tighten.

The premise is that she is wearing a body suit with a pattern designed to provide an illusion. Kind of a super hero costume type getup that confuses any would be villains that look at her. Imagine if it worked and made them dizzy just having her outfit in their field of vision.

The idea was somewhat inspired by The Collector 2 (TC2) in a reply he wrote. In the thread “All About Avatars on Amaz0ns”, TC2 was disappointed that he could no longer have an animated avatar because GIFs were no longer an option.

Since I have seen optical illusions that prove creating a perception of movement with a still image, it made me wonder if I could accomplish more than just abstract waves of movement. I wanted to try creating the appearance of purposeful movement.

I am not sure if I succeeded or not. The background appears to move somewhat as hoped, but the outfit does not move much unless I look at it just right.

I am curious what other people see when they look at it. I would be grateful for feedback.

I don’t expect to try doing any more like this. While it might be possible to refine it, I will leave that to someone else to try. Creating this was a lot of tedious work. It was fun once, but anything further would just be excessive.

If anyone else wants to try, I discovered that the spacing of the wedges has a big impact on the amount of movement. Too much or too little and there is less movement, but get the spacing right and the appearance of movement is enhanced.

All artwork is original to me. I drew every line. I created this in Photoshop.

You definitely succeeded in creating movement for sure! The outfit doesn’t move you’re right, but the background moves everytime even if I try to make it as stationary as possible with my mind. Great job pulling it off!

Still not an animated avatar, but definitely a step in the right direction!
