I saw the marriage as a bad idea they made work over the years. What made the "One More Day" retcon so infuriating is that it was a poorly written "fuck you" to the last twenty years of continuity (and to its fans). There were more logical ways to end the marriage, but in the end when you resort to pure magic (I'm not talking about superhero "magic") then you really have run out of ideas.

Not to mention that last-minute "Oh, by the way, MJ's pregnant" reveal was an obvious middle finger at the readers.

He destroyed what was explicitly said to be(even though it was only introduced as an excuse for Mephisto do want to do this crap) a one in a million match that was true love and blessed by God. He did this when lots of people, including Aunt May herself and _GOD_ told him not to. And in the process, he erased a few people from existance.
Why? Because he wanted an easy solution to his problems.
Mephisto offered the Silver Surfer deals that were a _million_ times sweeter than this. He never took them. Why didn't he? Because he knew that if he did that and took the easy way out, Mephisto would WIN. And Mephisto winning is never a good thing. He's among the most evil beings in the universe. If he offers you a deal like that, you can rest assured that even if you can't see any harm in it, it's still there. Because that's what he does. He makes the universe a worse place to live in for everybody. And if you make a deal with him, you're helping him to do that.
How am I supposed to see him as a hero now?
I bet Mephisto gets his soul, now.

Exactly. Exactly. This is the whole damn problem. What Peter did is quite possibly THE most grotesquely out-of-character act Marvel has perpetrated yet. He never takes the easy way. Taking the easy way is what got him into this job in the first place!
