“Red Tails”, the story of the Tuskegee Airman, the only all black fighter squadron in the USAAF. Also, the only WW2 fighter escort squadron to not lose a single bomber under their protection.

KeymasterActually an official Air Force records review in 2006 confirmed the loss of 25 bombers to enemy aircraft being escorted by the Tuskeegee Airmen, though one surviving member claims his review of the records does not show that as does one other guy who worked at the national defense university. Still impressive considering in some raids bomber squadrons were losing that many in a single mission.
The HBO movie “The Tuskeegee Airmen” was quite good, though was “Based on a true story” and some characters were composites and not actual fliers. I;’m going to hold off getting too excited for “Red Tails” until I see some more footage.
It’s good to see some interest in World War 2 exploits, too bad even after 70 years the United States Pacific Submarine Force is virtually unknown to anyone. They carried the war to Japan for two and a half years before the surface navy went on the offensive and they did it with poorly tested defective weapons, ill conceived tactics and far too many unfit commanders. It would be nice to see something about the 442nd Infantry Regiment too, the only all Japanese American combat unit and still the highest decorated unit in United States military history.

ParticipantBack in college I worked in hospitality and we hosted a ceremony where some of the airmen where honored. It was great meeting them and chatting for a bit, and they had a great sense of humor as well. Thanks for the heads up.

The submarine story would be hard to do, since they were a “solitary” action, individual subs working autonomously. Plus, there’s no real “Rah-rah” moments that would get the audience cheering.
As for the 442nd “Nisei” Division, there was a movie about them made back in 1951, “Go For Broke!” with Van Johnson. He played their gaijin commander but the film starred a lot of actual 442nd veterans.
I’m just really happy to see “Red Tails” finally make it to the screen. Lucas has had this movie in the works since before he started on the Star Wars prequels. Film and military fans like myself were beginning to wonder if he’d actually ever film it. Even after he finally committed it to film, there still were doubts of it coming out, since it was actually filmed over 2 years ago.
The announcement a month ago of it coming out January 20th, 2012 was a total out-of-left-field surprise to everyone. It was one of those “Well, Star Wars will be out on BluRay soon, the live action Star Wars TV show is on hold, we’re still working on Indy V and, oh yeah, by the way, “Red Tails” in coming out in January.” kinda things.
