It is a shame.
The idea of making work to sell, only to not see it sell as well as you'd hoped is one of the major reasons I've not done the 'selling artwork' route. Sadly, because I spend more time on the pics I draw, not getting paid for them really makes it hard for me to justify drawing in the first place. A vicious cycle.
So I can kinda see that being the case for femXman. Shame really. :/
September 16, 2007 at 4:50 am #59911TC2ParticipantDrawing should always be from the love of drawing, that's always been my personal belief.
If I were a talented artist I probably would have sold a few things, but my drawing style is more geared towards animation and is not really something I think could be sold so easily.
It's much easier to justify drawing if you just draw and enjoy doing it, the fun of it is what let's me draw as much as I do. So I can't imagine drawing for money, as I know in the FMG business there's a lot of notorious cheapskates and it's definitely a market where you need to do something spectacular for someone to shell out decent money for you.
I suppose the bottom line is that there needs to be more than 5 people who can pay for FMG artwork, because it's always the same people paying for commissions. Time to get UN BROKE guys!
September 16, 2007 at 7:29 am #59912demented20ParticipantI'm sort of torn in this whole thing. As a fan of femxman's art, I'd like to see him keep drawing, but a man has to do what a man has to do money wise. Also for his art. I'm not an artist by any stretch unless you like stick figures with biceps and breasts. I have no idea how long it takes finish a drawing, but I know he's probably put days of his life into this. I've written 40+ female muscle stories and that takes up a good bit of my free time, but I never thought of this as a business really. Maybe I'm an idiot and there are lots of female muscle artists and writers making a living doing this, but I doubt it. Personally I do it because I think its fun. I still write mainstream type stuff and I've even made a little coin out of it(and I mean coins literaly 😉
Maybe femxman is just frustrated with the whole thing and out of balance with it. If he plans to make a living with his art this is probably not the write genre to be working in to be honest. He'll find his niche and once he does maybe he can rediscover the love of femuscle art.January 1, 2008 at 6:43 am #59913AnonymousGuestYeah, it has been fun. Now the year is over and I never said "I quit".
A friend directed me over here to see what's up. So to set everybody straight, I didn't quit anything. It's just that my priorities have changed.
truly sad, sounds like he was getting nasty e-mails!
There were no nasty emails and if there were I am far to determined in what I want to do for it to effect me.
In all fairness, after a while all he ever did was come here to post that he'd updated his site with new art for sale, and pretty much stopped actually sharing artwork with the people who'd made him popular (or as "popular" as a female muscle artist can be, I suppose). Jumping the shark by suddenly switching to only selling his art while offering low-res previews was kinda a cop-out. Not quite of WreckShop proportions, but still a cop-out.
That is very interesting you say that. First, the second "free" stops coming somebody has something to say and not to assume but when I put up these low res versions did you still click "save as"? Now granted the people made me popular but in know way helped to define my skill and or improve. That credit alone can only go to a select few who gave constructive criticism. Like Zebody, Wreckshop, R.Silver, Mr. Shhh, Scoundrel, hell even the cat's at Awefilms when I first started and wasn't even good enough for them and my strength and determination to constantly improve. So that being said I don't think that this is a popularity contest and still trying to understand "cop-out".
That is sad to hear. He's a talented artist and a really nice guy. I don't have a problem with him wanting to start selling his art either. Each artwork takes many hours to complete. It's only fair to get something back for all the time you put in.
I reckon he'll be back one day though. I've learnt firsthand that this particular interest of ours isn't something that you can just turn off.
That's so true. Even Scoundrel says that. Thanks for your support everyone.
I think he had something like 500 rough drawings of muscular women that he was trying to get rid of. I find it hard to believe that you would draw so much of a particular subject matter unless it was more than just a passing interest. The way I see it is that drawing is his first love and muscular women a close second. I guess he felt that his drawing skills, and perhaps a potential professional career, were suffering because of what he was drawing all the time. A similar thing happened to WreckShop and AOS. Thankfully, AOS made a full comeback and WreckShop now draws the odd muscular woman from time to time.
It's a pity FemXMan didn't come to this board and tell us the reasons himself.
Man that was 3 days of shredding and a garbage bag and a half of it, it was hard to do. My time was extremly limited. Drawing by far is my first passion. I love creating and I've loved muscular girls for as long as I can remember. For those who offered to buy my art, Lionforce, Tigersan, I am sorry. All this transpired right before my move and UPS and other couriers were being difficult. I really didn't have time to deal with them so I said f*ck it. So the next time around should be okay and the quality will be much higher. Alas, muscle art gets in the way of my progression yet at the same time helps me move forward. I try new things without fear when I do this stuff.
I have never consider this to be a business, this is way too exclusive. This is like a secret life type thing cause Female Bodybuilding in it's own right is still too black and white. People hate it or they love it. Unless I find a girl who "understands" this stuff I love to draw then it can never be a business taking up the majority of my time. Also I'd probably have to tone it down… a lot.
Hope this answered some questions, if it still matters. Sure I have more to say, but that's enough for now.
Thanks to all the fans…haters, you know where to go!
Happy New year!!!
January 1, 2008 at 4:48 pm #59914Red_SilverParticipantI think it's good you took the time to answer. Hope things are going well for you, what ever you'll be doing.
January 1, 2008 at 9:24 pm #59915Mr.ShhhParticipantToday's a great day! Having FemXman updating again is a major victory for lovers of great artwork everywhere! I hope 2008 is the year Fem finds a balance between exploring this particular interest and pursuing the world of legitamate commercial artwork. And as for the money thing – someone who puts as much effort into his art as FemXman does deserves to make whatever money they can. No one's gonna get rich on a niche like ours, but every little bit helps. Great to have you back, man!! ;D
January 1, 2008 at 9:48 pm #59916Lupus14ParticipantWho's a "hater"???? ???
January 2, 2008 at 1:14 am #59917FettParticipantGreat, Femxman! It's good to have you back, bud!
