This thread is a great example of why I stopped trying to moderate the forums, or find people to moderate the forums, or even find people to participate in the forums.
I learned from participating in a musician’s mailing list, sometimes the best way to build traffic is to let the participants have a “little leash”. If you keep them too “on subject”, you end up with nothing but a small cadre of diehards and fanatics, and no one else.
Well, this site still does almost half-a-million pageviews per month, down somewhat from its peak several years ago, but still pretty damned busy. I do almost nothing to promote it, and the only major change I’ve made in the last few years was to get rid of the old, resource-intensive forum application so I could move it off a dedicated server that was costing me $110 a month.
I’ll keep it running for as long as people show up to post.
Yeah, with that we demonstrated that a thread could work very well.
I always wondered how guys like you in the admin could make a single dollar by running a website. -Rob
