That’s Joanna Thomas, I believe the show title was Supersize She. Wasn’t a very positive look at FBB’s.

Well, his duel posting of this topic over @ RX Muscle was received well enough.

And it doesn’t hurt to have Debbie Bramwell, a member of RX Muscle, in the documentary. 😉

I re-watched the documentary Supersize She and I loved it. Joanna is my role model. She spends months training and dieting, makes little to no money due to poor funding in fbb, and the only recognition she gets is from her friend Debbie, her parents, and her diehard fans like us.

My favorite part was when the steroid question was brought up the Joanna and she sarcastically said “yeah all you need is to take roids and magically become a professional bodybuilder.” No dieting, no training, no dehydrating, no genetics, etc. to be a bodybuilder. Come on we all know professional bodybuilders take steroids. You can’t be a professional bodybuilder, male or female, and not be juicing. The anti-steroid puritians out there are annoying.

It’s kinda sad Joanna hasn’t been to another Olympia since the documentary. I wanted her to at least come in second place at the end of the documentary, because let’s face it, Dayana Cadeau is unstoppable, but for her to come in 7th was just unacceptable.

What did you all think of the documentary Supersize She? Plus do you guys have any more professional female bodybuilding documentaries you could recommend for me?

another one you may want to look into that has both male and females and you can see how they are seen is this one:

i personally think its interesting and i do admire the dedication and sacrifice needed to obtain a body like that for both genders. THough as i mentioned in the other thread, our perception of what we see as the greatest body may have changed since the seventies and eighties

I believe the reason why Joanna didn’t continue with pro bodybuilding was that she was sort of pushed out by the fact that she was trying to earn a living with her website, webcam sessions, videos, etc. It’s pretty common to see the girls that turn to online media whether it be soft or hard core porn type, ususally don’t end up on stage competing again. Joanna Thomas, Denise Masino, Yvette Bova, Lynn McCrossin just to name a few. Denise out of that group had the most promising physique and career.

Even some of the newer girls on the scene are starting to drop out of competition because there’s more money in the fetish of muscle than the actual sport.

I recently came across Kristy Hawkins locally. Instantly recognized her mentioned she’s “semi-retired’ now. Yet her physique was no where near contest shape. She has taken her career in another direction, working in the bio-tech field and she was on a different documentary that cast women bodybuilders in a similar light.

It really just depends on the individual. I’m not saying that going the adult themed route is bad, we all have to make a living somehow and the powers that be within the IFBB do NOT make it easy for women at all. The prizes are laughable for the women compared to the men. Why?

All because middle America can’t accept women who are muscular

Who remembers when the Mr. and Ms. Olympia used to be on NETWORK TV? (yes I’m dating myself here). Who remembers when ESPN used to have amateur and pro shows on air?

    What the hell happened?

I remember those days and I miss them. Sure they put em on late at night, but I’d still watch them. Some of the women there were gorgeous.

I think you answered your own question with your next line.

Outside of a niche subculture, no marketability,
therefore no need for them as reps and/or spokesmouths for selling products for a profit.

This is not strictly limited to the US, this is true whereever you go in the world.

Conversely, the women, many of whom look like they’ve been hit with an ugly stick just don’t know when to stop using the juice. Not exactly the kind of visual standard bearers that you want if your goal to win over the mainstream to the sport. Major turn off, not only to men, but especially women.

Go back to the 80’s, seems like every FBBr that hit the scene was amazingly attractive and consequently not as threatening in the eyes of the public. Were drugs used then, certainly. However, they seemed to have a better sense of physique balance w/ their femininity that is lacking with the current generation. Perhaps this is because they were well aware that as a vanguard they were role models as well as athletes to any women that would follow them. Fast forward to today that aspect is gone.
