Their popularity was partly due to their era – FBBers and buff women were more popular because

    a.  it was more fashionable then

    and

    b.  the background was of FBBers that looked like buff women rather than men – the size is a secondary issue – the main reasons for the decline in popularity are extreme dryness at contests compared with ripped but healthy-looking contest shape in the 1990s and the effect of excessive GH and steroid use.

Yes, Jana (and Chyna) has been a lot in TV but it's an exception (a very good one). I don't see much female bodybuilders in Finnish television or magazines, and as long as I'm aware, the situation is quite the same in other countries – apart from Germany that is.

And I don't like the way that usually BBing is represented as an extreme thing. It's just a sport among others.

Then again, if FBBs are easy to market, how come they get so small awards?

That's the point – we don't see FBBing as extreme, but it is compared with the rest of the world.  This fact leads to the realisation that FBBers are incredibly difficult to market to all but a small minority – us!  Even at its late-'80s/early-'90s height, FBBing was a minority interest, but, at the top level, it is now so extreme that it is losing even its previously reliable fanbase.

every sport in the top level is extreme..the more extreme better it sells.
or did you hear usain bolt running next year 11 seconds, because this would be better for fan base ??

the problem why fbbs (or male bb ) are not marketed in the media lies in the history of the sport:
weider did have a contract with the most of them exclusively for their magazines…they were slaves to the weider publishing with contracts not allowing them to do shoots for any other newspaper or tv.

as opposite with vince mcmahoon: he knew how to market their biggest women…chyna still has the most sold playboy issue !!

the problem is not if a fbb is bigger or not , it is just the organization.

if your theory would be true, we would see a lot of figure girls in the mainstream media ;D

Even though I like some of the larger women, Tazzie Colomb comes to mind, I think it was the original pioneer women that inspired girls. Rachel, Cory, Lori Bowen and the others. Most of the time I hear women say "ewww I don't want to look like a man", they are thinking of TODAY'S woman bodybuilder. One time, years ago, I remember a girl saying she she wouldn't mind her body looking like one the women of that time.

I look at it as alot more guys want to be big then girls want to be big, so its more marketable… Why would anyone invest money in an area with almost little to no return..

Go into a gym, most of the guys want to be big, so they will go to GNC among other places to get thier products.  The demand for women just isnt there enough for them to start sponsoring/rewarding women as they do the men.
