ParticipantIt's the result of watching too many YouTube videos to a soudtrack of Jerusalem, I Vow to Thee my Country, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 and his Enigma Variation "Nimrod", but I thought that it might be nice for British members of Amaz0ns to have a little thread to indulge in a patriotic moment if the mood takes us. 8) The main inspiration was in realising that our American cousins (who of course form the majority on this site) seem to have very little guilt in being patriotic, whereas we're so terrified of the right-wing BNP types that we fear patriotism with xenophobia, when the two are easily separable.
Anyway, I'll start the ball rolling with a few choice videos:

RB was going to be in my second posting. I must say I could do without the over-blown soprano voice – a bit OTT methinks. Nice contribution, though – cheers Lingster.

Ah! don't make me laugh! Lightning was a flat iron compared to the Mirage III. ::)

But I concede that the greatest fighter/interceptor warbird of all time was British indeed, but that was the Spitfire!! 😉

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK6uNQoBAGY&feature=relatedNo no no! The Spitfire was the prettiest, but its abilities were limited – its narrow undercarriage made it awkward to land, it was not a stable gun platform, and the stressed-aluminium construction made repairs complicated. In period, the Hurricane was the better allrounder.
I have to take exception to the idea of the Dassault Mirage being better than the Lightning, because it got its posterior kicked in the Falklands by the Harrier, which was great but not as good as the Lightning.

As if the pilots were in the same league… ::)
The aircraft isn't all that matters. 😉May 8, 2008 at 10:44 pm #69704cpbell0033944

If you say so… ::)
In any case, the bird sure was impressive. I saw one a few *cough-cough* years ago, and it sure was big. 😛July 6, 2008 at 3:34 pm #69706cpbell0033944
ParticipantLet's not forget the bird that would have prevented the Lightning vs. Mirage argument from happening had it entered service – TSR2.
