KeymasterHmm, on a side note, one of the hypothesises for the Greek stories about the Amazons does come from the women of Sparta, who were renowned as the ultimate tough girls. If a Spartan man couldn't subdue one in a fight, she wouldn't have anything to do with him.
Talk about hard to get women.
Probably there's a nugget of truth to it, but by all accounts there were multiple "Amazon" tribes located throughtout Asia Minor and around the Black Sea – the Greeks seeing a matriarchal society or even one that simply reckoned lineage and inherited power through the female line (i.e. not a man's son, but his sister's son became the next chief) as amazonian.

I must confess all that Greek mythology goes over my head, but I've always felt that there must have been warrior women somewhere around there to prompt the writings of the Greek scholars. Oh to have a time machine and pay them a visit – tribes of heroic warrior buff girls. 😮 8)

Well, so did the Romans have a similar fascination for them, which from out of that mythos – real or otherwise that the Greeks, combined with Rome's confronation with Boudicca and the Iceni Revolt along with fighting off the Germans (who also fielded a number of Warrioresses as did the Kelts) spawned the popular interest by the citizenry in having gladiatrix fighting it out in their Gladiatorial Games.
Originally, this was thought to be a sideshow / titillation exhibition act, sort of as a warm up to the main events, but historians / archaeologists are beginning to now think it was much more wide spread, even given an equal footing with their male counterparts in dueling it out.

ParticipantSo at what point in history did this custom fall out of favor?
Was it the fall of the Roman Empire and the ushering in of the Christianity dominated Middle (Dark) ages that did it. I'm no history buff, as Alex seems to be, but if this is the case, I'd wish that the Roman Empire hadn't dissapeared the way it did.
We might be living in a very different world right now… ;D
