My father and l have been upset by the officer related shootings in America this year. The last shooting by a police officer in the Ottawa area was in 1984 when l was 11 – the shooter was a cop who responded to a report of armed prowlers at a local schoolyard. The officer accidentally shot a young paintball player dead, and steps were taken to make sure it never happened again.

    1) Any officer related shooting is headline news. Sometimes it’s just local headlines, sometimes it’s national/international headlines.

    2) All officer related shootings are investigated. Some are deemed justified. Some are not. All of them get presented to a grand jury to determine if there should be a trial.

    3) So what are you upset about?

Most people today have lost critical thinking, and can only be spoon fed ideas. The media like to stir up anger. Sadly most people can’t figure this out.

l am fairly certain the officer in question was punished for his actions, although how l don’t know. What l realized this morning was that the boy he shot may have been carrying a dart pistol put out by Nerf at the time and readily available but hardly a lethal weapon; l believe the toy itself was called Laser Sight. Either way, proper legislative steps were likely taken to prevent another incident, as there have been no further incidents since that time.
