OMG 2 posts in one day, I must be feeling sick.
Being in the land downunder does come with a few benefits. This week held one of them.
On Thursday the new Michael Bay Transformers movie opened here to some what sedated reviews.
The box office had it's one of it's biggest opening weekends with thousands of people waiting to see if our childhoods were ripped apart.
Seeing as my sites are undergoing relocation and updates I've decided to post my review here seeing as I've been quiet over the last few years (thanks for reminding me TC)
The first thing to do when you get your jumbo pop corn and coke and site in the seat is forget about this being related to our long lost youths. It's not. While some of the characters names have been kept and the premise (Thanks Steven Spielberg) is the same this is a completely different Transformers from the old Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide…
All early indications to me were the movie was going to focus heavily of the Spike replacement, Sam. That's not completely the case. While he does have a lot of screen time this is still obviously a Transformers movie.
Michael Bay is known for his quick camera movements and fast cuts. In the early stages of the movie when things are getting under way this is to the detriment of the movie, not the storyline. At times you just want to get a good clear shot of the damage being caused or the appearance of the Transformers in their robot mode. It's not going to happen.
The sound was amazingly done. All the robots sound like they are massive metal creatures, even Scorpinok, which was a surprise if you've seen the trailers. The inclusion of Peter Cullen reprising his role of Prime sends shivers down your neck in the opening credits and again with the use of classic Prime one liners. **Spoiler** "One shall stand, and one shall fall" **End Spoiler** (was that really a spoiler…). One Concern I had with the voices was the inclusion of Hugo Weaving as Megs… Don't worry it works, almost too well.
The CG characters do look amazing and their transformations do look like it could almost happen. ILM did an amazing job once again.
Micheal Bay has been quoted in places on the internet as saying he believes in having comedy as part of his movies. It works. There are times when you WILL laugh out load.
The only concern I had with the special effects were a few times you could tell they used the Bumblebee puppet instead of the CG Bumblebee, they do look different, and when Prime and Megs fight in a certain scene, it looks like it was created for Star Wars (the original movie), or Doctor Who.
An action packed movie, a few laughs, a death or 2 (or right it's a massacre but when you have 40 foot robots bent on destruction what do you expect) and a chance to relive your youth one more time plus the thoughts after leaving the cinema about that car that's on the road next to you, you really couldn't want anything more.
If you like Transformers you're going to watch the movie anyway, if they were never your thing in the 80's I'm still giving it what it deserves as an action movie with a simple story but great execution.
4 out of 5PSI will ask if anyone can give me their thoughts on the new game for the 360 let me know, we don't get it here until Thursday I really want to know if it is bad as a lot of sites are saying.
