    Something to contemplate the next time you want to go heavy on the bench press.

    A few questions that went through my mind were:

    1) What's with the open palm grip, benching w/ a barbell?

    2) No spotter – especially on a heavy lift that you might not be use to?

    3) If no spotter – use a bench with a safety rack (or) a Smith Machine.

    I admit to some mild annoyance at the "freak accident" claim.  It may or may not be a common accident, but it's not a freak accident.  If you are lifting something heavy there will always be the risk that you may drop it, especially if you are careless or do not take all of the recommended precautions.  Even so, there is risk.  A college football player was recently hospitalized after a barbell crushed his throat.  I don't know what kind of grip he was using, but he had a spotter, yet the weight slipped from his hands and only the well-developed muscles in his neck saved his life.

    The article didn't give many details, most of it seems to be from the comments section.  Is there another news report that explains what grip he was using and if he had a spotter on hand?

    Right now I'm just concentrating on cardio exercsie. I wouldn't even try to bench press without someone to spot me.  :-[

    I'd assume so, based on the comments section, which was in part the origin for some of the questions that came to my mind.
