KeymasterBabylon 5 is one of the greatest sci-fi shows of all time. Next to Stargate SG-1 and Farscape, it was one of the best pieces of genre TV to come out of the late ’90s. Luckily for us, former Star Trek and Babylon 5 star Walter Koenig says more Babylonian adventures could be on the way.
Last weekend, Koenig appeared at a Star Trek convention where he told fans about an eye-opening meeting he had with Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski.
According to Koenig, “He told me that he is in negations to reacquire the rights to Babylon 5 and it looks pretty good. Now, what that portends, I am not entirely sure. It could be a new series, or it could be a feature film, but he was quite animated about it. He seemed very excited, and Warner Brothers is dealing with him in good faith. So you might see another Babylon 5 in the not-too-distant future.” Could it be? Could more Babylon 5 be in our future? If they couldn’t produce a new series, we’d love another made-for-TV movie. The only downside is that several cast members from the original show have died since its cancellation. Jeff Conaway (Zack Allen), Richard Biggs (Dr. Stephen Franklin) and Andreas Katsulas (G’Kar) are no longer with us. How would they formulate a story with all those key players missing? A prequel? A spinoff? What do you think?

Restart Crusade, show us all the Earth Force blackops stuff they cooked up with shadowtech we were supposed to see. As long as it’s better then that “Legend of the Rangers” stuff.

ParticipantAs much as I respect Strazynski and Koenig I doubt they could pull off a reboot of B5 without the protests, however a movie would be nice, or a new series… would definitely be nice, but for the love of everything don’t put it on SyFy, them @$%!heads wouldn’t let it survive two episodes!

KeymasterAnother I doubt you’d be able to get back, except perhaps for a cameo role, would be Jerry Doyle (Michael Garibaldi) – after B5 he left acting altogether and has had since a successful nationwide talk radio program.
Problem is, B5 never really had the large-enough audience ratings to keep it alive in while syndication. In fact, Straczynski shot a preemptive conclusion episode for the series for the end season 4. If not for the intervention of Ted Turner (who reputedly is/was a B5 fan) giving it a home on his TNT channel there’d not have been a season 5, much less any adjunct related television movies or the Ranger spin-off series.
I think that instead of trying to resurrect B5 with all its baggage, JMS ought to move on to something new – perhaps a television series (or mini-series) adaptation of the S.M. Sterling Draka novels . . .
“I like a good story well told. That is the reason I am sometimes forced to tell them myself.”

Well, it was fun while it lasted—yesterday’s declaration by Walter Koenig that J. MIchael Straczynski was in negotiations to acquire the rights to Babylon 5 set off a wave of excitement through the fansphere (and one of the most active comment threads we’ve had in recent memory). Now, however, the man himself is setting the record straight, and it’s not good news for those wanting to see the beloved sci-fi franchise return.
In response to fan inquiries via Twitter, Straczynski had this to say:
CHEKOV!Well, it was fun to speculate, and given the high degree of recycling being done in movies and TV these days, we’d never say never. But, for now, it appears Babylon 5 will continue to rest in peace.

ParticipantAm I the only one who thinks JMS, whose stated before that if B5 stuff was in the works he wouldn’t say anything until confirmed because he doesn’t want to get the hopes up, has specifically mentioned WB in his tweet? He has the movie rights to B5 and has said he could go to any network or studio and say, “Here’s a movie franchise. You interested?” It might be he is in negotiations… just not with WB…
