Sorry about my absence lately. It started with a very busy time at work, and then just as that was winding down a bit, we had a change of management who hired a new Head of Information Technology who is even more controlling than most IT types are. In short, our computer files, internet usage and emails are now closely monitored to make sure we are using them only for work purposes. It's not longer enough to get our work done. We now must not be seen to do anything with our computers except work.
Naturally, more time will be spent reading newspapers and chatting on the phone and by the coffee machine.
Unfortunately, my time corresponding with you and visiting the forums will now be strictly limited. I'm really sorry about this. I will check in when I can but I will become an unreliable and infrequent member.
I won't stop writing, and actually will have a new installment of Pendant Changes ready soon, so you will continue to see my contributions when I can find free time to post them. And they haven't yet clamped down on web email, so I will answer emails when I can.
Again, I'm sorry for this. When the climate of fear and intimidation eases I'll be back.

April 10, 2006 at 2:54 am #26252LingsterKeymasterMark, it may be better for you to use a Blackberry or similar wireless device for this kind of net access. I would not recommend accessing this site from work if you are under any kind of IT scrutiny whatsoever. (That goes for everybody.)
Here's what I do:
- I have a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone that I can use as a telephone access line for my laptop.
- I have software running on my home PC that lets me use it as a relay, so I can use its DSL connection over the Bluetooth-phone bridge. That way I'm not using the corporate network. If you have AOL, you could just dial AOL using your Bluetooth phone.
There's also a way to access Amaz0ns using the small browser on many mobile devices, but I haven't really configured that yet.

Great to hear from you at last, Mark. I understand if you can't join the party as much.
Sorry corporate policy is such a crimp. But hey… you should try websurfing whilst Great Walled in, like meself. There are some spots I CAN'T access from home OR work. (COUGH cough koffDCM'sblogkoff)
And Google kowtowing to the Local Powers That Be to bollix any searches for certain words? (COUGH cough koffhum4nr1gh+5koff koffd3m0cr4cykoff) Don't get me started. 😡
All the same, it's great that we'll soon see the ball rolling on Pendant Changes. And I've been busy writing other stuff in the meantime. Hope you can give those a peek when you get time.

Good luck with the Byte-Nazis!
Tschuss!

It's surprising to me that they haven't blocked Amaz0ns.
April 14, 2006 at 8:56 pm #26256Mark NewmanParticipantThey can stop me surfing but they can't stop me writing.
After all, it's what I do for a living.
A few passwords and clever file naming.
I even look like I'm working.
It makes me so mad.
Anyway, "Thursday" is nearly done. It should be up by the end of the month. Sooner if I'm lucky with time, inspiration and posting opportunties.

Hmm. You've never heard the phrase keylogging, I take it?
Bottom line, if you're using their hardware, they can monitor what you do. You need to be careful.
