Definitely off-season. Their faces don't look so sunken and hard. Plus, their muscles take on a much curvier, pleasing shape.

This is pretty much the exact same answer I would give.

Have you guys ever seen Gina Davis in her off season look?

Women bodybuilders back in the 1980's, early '90s, the difference between on and off season wasn't all that great. They just looked a little more cut. Like Cory Everson, Rachel McLish or Charla Sedacca.

But starting in the mid to late '90s, the difference started becoming night and day, and my preference skewed more and more to the off season look. I've read that a bodybuilder, at competition weight, is physically weakest because of the weight and water loss. You can really see it in women, they look haggard and tired. To me, Roxie Rain is a good example. Off season, I find her incredibly hot. Competition, she looks like she could keel over at any moment.

There is one other body type I find interesting, the ones that get truly huge off season. They look like they quadruple in size and become this real life She-Hulk. Theresa O'Brien was like this. Competition weight, she was thin and sleek. Off season, she was absolutely massive, her legs looked like tree trunks. She looked like she could single handedly take on the front 4 of a pro football team.

Well, I don't know. I prefer them cut and ripped. I just love their definition, it gives me the impression of immense power – even if in that condition they are 'weaker'.

Offseason – shapely, while sculpted and defined at the same time.

I'm turned off by the current era of the contest look with its ultra-low body fat skeleton face/concentration camp appearance.

CptMatt is right, back in the 80's it was a whole different world and the gals at contest time looked hot.  But not now.

Fascinating; the general consensus so far is exactly in agreement with my view – a full offseaso look or a "retro-contest" look (firm and defined but not mummified) are preferred by most respondants so far.  I understand why judges look for ultra-shredded conditioning – it lets them be lazy, as they don't have to use as much judgement or thought to decide who has built the best body – instead, they can concentrate on who has the least bodyfat – IMO a much easier decision.  Sorry, but that's the way I feel.  I have often daydreamed about what my judging criteria would be if I founded a new contest, and they would be mainly shape, proportion and symmetry, with conditioning only to highlight the muscles.  I would deduct marks for excess vascularity and unattractive facial effects, i.e. pinched cheeks.
