I dont know if you guys are aware of the upcoming (november 2007) Beowulf adaptation, based on a script by Roger Avary (pulp fiction) and Neil Gaiman (sandman)
directed by robert zemeckis (jessica rabbit)
Angelina Jolie is cast as 'Evil Queen', or 'Queen of Darkness'
There is no characters like this in the Beowulf poem. But the plot line goes like this (IMDB): The Scandinavian warrior Beowulf must fight and defeat the monster Grendel who is terrorizing towns, and later, Grendel's mother, who begins killing out of revenge.
Grendel monster will be Crispin Glover, and his mother will be the Angeline's role. There are many interpretations from the poem, its 700 AD. The main interpretation is that Grendel's mother is some kind of a dragon, until the 90's, when some girl (christine something) proved there is no input in the poem showing her as a monster like her son, but a woman with monstrous power.
Neil Gaiman said that the movie story will be very very weird, the Latino Review wrote: The way the script is written, there is no way in bloody this will be a PG-13 film. This is definitely going to be a hard R. That would be the only way to do this thing justice. This is Conan the Barbarian r-rated full of gruesome macho violence, boasting, and lots of sex. At least that is the way it is written. This flick is about a kick ass balls to the wall barbarian. This ain't Toy Story Folks, THIS SCRIPT ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
He compared with toy story because the movie will be CG with motion capture, and a new system to capture the actor's eyes (to avoid the dead eye syndrome of Polar Express). The movie is also targeted for 3D theaters
In another official description of the movie I've found this: In a time of heroes, the mighty warrior Beowulf slays the demon Grendel and incurs the wrath of its monstrous yet seductive mother, in a conflict that transforms a king into a legend.
Ok, so she's not a dragon anymore, but a seductive mother
The review of the script ends with this: The first half is pretty much straightforward like the poem. The second half is all about the nasty bitch that is Grendel's mother and she steals the show but you're going to have to go to the flick to find out!
