I noticed others post thumbs to their pages. I tried to figure it out, but I couldn't find any obvious way that worked, so I'll wait until later.

About your question about thumbnails, I had been using imageshack/photobucket, but there's actually a semi-easier way that I've been using recently to post thumbnails from Deviantart. It's not that intuitive though:
1) On the deviation page click Share this/Blog it
2) Select LiveJournal (even if you don't have an account, don't worry)
3) It'll bring you to LiveJournal with the code in place, click the HTML tab.
4) Copy the code and go to this HTML to BBCode convertor, paste it in and hit the Submit button
5) Copy the BBCode (which should look like the below snippet) and paste it into the forums:
The benefit of doing this is that it references Deviantart's thumbnails so you don't have to worry about involving a third-party image host. The downside is that it's more difficult to post multiple images using this method. BTW, Some of those images were NSFW, remember to make a note on those. Hope that helps.
Once you use this method a few times, it becomes second nature. You can also stay in Rich Text mode at LiveJournal if you want to adjust the text or remove the DeviantART text and links. Hope that helps.
