One month later…
A visitor tag clipped on his shirt, the scientist who had spoken to Li Hua a month ago re-entered the Hangzhou Middle School. It was an hour after school dismissal, yet the scientist made his way past the deserted school toward the athletic track, where the school’s Girls Olympic Sprint Team was supposed to be practicing.
Unlatching the fenced gate, the scientist smiled as he saw the sprint team on the far end of the track. From where he was, he could see that there were at least eight girls, all dressed in the signature red sports attire, who were jogging around the track. The scientist calmly made his way to the bleachers, and sat down as he waited from the girls to pass by him.
One by one, each of the girls jogged by him, a few of them managing a glance at him. Then came along little Li Hua, who the scientist recognized immediately. He called out to her, and Li Hua, noticing the scientist, smiled cheerfully and waved at him. The scientist gestured for Li Hua to come over. Picking up her towel from a nearby bench, she wiped the sweat off her as she walked energetically up the bleachers.
The scientist could then immediately notice that Li Hua’s physique was different. Quickly studying her from head to toe, he saw that the featherweight, petite little girl from one month ago had now gained a more athletic frame fitting of her status as a national Olympic sprinter. Li Hua’s shoulders were slightly broader and her deltoids had a visible roundness to them. Her arms, which were so thin the scientist could wrap his whole hand around them, now had more definition and were at least a couple of inches thicker, with the faintest hint of an actual bicep whenever she bent her arms. Her stomach muscles were also now becoming vaguely visible, with her abdominals flexing and relaxing as she breathed, when viewed from the correct angle. Her legs were also starting to gain shape.
The scientist, standing up, laughed as he shook Li Hua’s hand. When he asked Li Hua how she had been doing so far, she replied sweetly that ever since she was given the injection, she could now actually do most of the warm-up exercises such as push-ups and sit-ups. Li Hua, speaking very quickly, claimed she was starting to actually beat some of the other girls on the team with her sprint times, when before she was usually dead last.
The scientist congratulated Li Hua and commented on how she had become slightly more muscular. Li Hua immediately made a disgusted face, but then smiled again, saying she didn’t like having muscles as they were disgusting for a girl to have, and that she was just becoming more fit. The scientist nodded and continued to ask Li Hua more questions on her progress, taking notes on his notepad as she answered. Amidst this, he noticed that Li Hua’s demeanor was more confident and perky, rather than the shy girl he met a month ago. The question and answer later turned into a chit-chat that lasted almost an hour, as the scientist and Li Hua slowly developed a bit of a friendship. The scientist thanked Li Hua and said he would see her again next month.
He then walked over to the team coach, and asked him a few questions. The most notable thing the scientist got from the coach is that during the team’s gym training sessions, all the girls would have to do a little bit of exercise with weights. Li Hua, who used to be able to lift around five pounds only, had complained the weights were too light, and begun to lift weights in the 10-15 pound range.
The scientist, disturbed, returned to his workplace and studied the file on Dawn. He read that after lifting weights moderately for only a few months, Dawn was able to build at least five times the amount of muscle a typical female would be able to. Li Hua, it seemed, was already going down this path. Remembering how Li Hua expressed a distaste for bulky muscles on girls, and taken in by her innocence, the scientist had a change of heart and, against his orders, rapidly began to formulate a serum that would stop the effects of Dawn’s DNA. This would not return Li Hua to her original state, but it would keep her from experiencing the out-of-control muscle buildup Dawn experienced. The scientist couldn’t bring himself to risk turning the friendly, innocent 16-year old girl he befriended into a muscle-bound monster.
