Regarding SOPA/PIPA, this action demonstrates that the government can act against copyright infringers without passing SOPA/PIPA.

Regarding the government “singling out” megaupload and selectively enforcing the law: it takes a lot of people a lot of time to build and prosecute a criminal case, especially a big one requiring the participation of multiple governments. Each government has limited resources. The government cannot afford to enforce the law against everyone, but it should still enforce the law to the extent that it can, and it should enforce it with actions that provide the most deterrence against future crimes.

Regarding the difference between stealing a car and “stealing” a song: if I steal your car, you can’t use your car or give it or sell it to anyone else. If I infringe your copyright, you can still listen to your song and give it or sell it to others. (I’m not saying copyright infringement is ok. I’m just saying that it’s clearly different than stealing.)
