ParticipantHeh. How very true. I work with a bodybuilder at one of the dojos I train at. One of the things that surprised the hell out of me the first time we played was not how strong he was, but rather how limber. He has like three times the arms I have, but it's all fast-twitch muscle and he can move with blinding speed when he sets his mind to it.
The thing is, men are socialized to fight and to think and act aggressively. Women have to be brought to that way of thinking through training, overcoming generations of social programming in the process. For most women, it's a struggle. I actually had a woman tell me once that she didn't want to kiai (yell) during a self-defense because, "I don't want to be mean." That's the sort of thinking that society has told women is right, and it goes hand-in-hand with the idea that women should be submissive, passive, and weak.
I know I'm preaching to the choir, here, but I hate that crap.
And, yes, go Nikki!

ParticipantMan, oh man. If only she looked like that. You do good work, neighbor!

ParticipantOh, I do, believe you me! I've had a couple of students who were moderately athletic- cheerleaders or hockey players, mostly- and it's really a lot of fun to work with them because they already have some body awareness, so it's really just showing them how to use what they've already got. How to take and maintain space, how to assert their presence, and how to use their bodies to their best advantage instead of trying to match their weakest parts against an attacker's strongest.

ParticipantAlternate title "How to spend your tax return"
After Tigersan's post about his sculpture that he was making, I have been wanting to try it myself. I got my tax return a few days ago, so, I bought what I needed to get started, here is what I have so far. Mind you, this is about 10 hours of work over the last two days.
Or, if you're me, about 10 YEARS work. Lookin' good, AD! Is there a story behind this girl?

ParticipantHey, demented20- welcome to amaz0ns!
I confess it was your characters that first got me thinking along these lines, because they are pretty close to the only superstrong characters I've ever seen with realistic reasons to be in the gym- especially Jan. I was trying mainly to brainstorm reasons for a character like, for example, Sylph or someone of that ilk to spend time in a gym.

ParticipantPress worker at a metal scrapyard.
Hmmm. Interesting idea…
The difference is, she doesn't operate a hydraulic press. Instead, she just compresses the junk herself! This way, she doesn't have to worry about getting clumsy at work, doing even more damage….
Okay. Two things. 1) Not sure if Sylph is actually that strong (of course, who knows, she might be…)
2) In Sylph's own words, "Let me reiterate: I. AM. NOT. CLUMSY." I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not about to argue with her… 😉
Damned! I had this Idea for a character of my own. Also the situation that she jumps into a hydraulic press (to rescue some children that fell in there while plying at the junkyard) and pressing the hydraulic plates apart, until the machine finally breaks down.
Might be difficult to set that up- not impossible, and I'll give it some thought, but Sylph would be much more likely to use the emergency cut-off or, in a pinch, tear out the hydraulic feed lines. It would be faster and more likely to save the smalls.
Hmmm… I felt a little apprehension when the NYU Violets hit the scene… I sense our first person vs. person conflict's coming into the story pretty soon.
There's got to be some sort of person-to-person conflict, I suspect, or this storyline will probably get kind of dull, but it probably won't be either mean-hearted or antagonistic. There just aren't that many genuinely blind punks in the world who would look at Sylph and believe they stood a chance against her in any sort of a test of strength or endurance. Maybe reflexes of speed. Hmm. Gonna have to play with that one, too.
Oh, and I noticed Sylph's job poll's a "secret ballot" sort of thing. I didn't know you could do that.
I didn't know I could, either, until I played around with the Poll creation tool. It's so secret, in fact, that even I can't discover how people have voted (or even how many) until after the poll closes.

ParticipantCan I get an "AMEN," brother?
I teach karate and self-defense, and one of the things I love best about it is when a woman who was formerly very timid starts to understand that she never has to be completely helpless. Those FMG/Strength stories you mention are just amped up versions of what I do in reality, and I love it.

ParticipantRunning, of course. With weights (what, you didn't think the matching bracelets and anklets were just for show, did you?) 😉

ParticipantI did realize that these were entirely your own creations, kulli- I was trying (apparently unsuccessfully) to say that I loved your storyline and the way your characters intruded on any attempts you might make to illustrate someone else's work.
Let's try it again: I love these little strips, even if you choose to never draw another one. It's the sense of humor and the lively wit that makes it fun.

ParticipantThis comic is a stitch! I love it! I only wish I had subjects that inspiring to draw my fanfix from…
