I suppose this is tangentially related to the self-growth topic… but suitably different that it warrants a separate thread, mostly because I intend to begin with a somewhat lengthy discourse that wouldn't fit there…

Anyway, recently I've been pondering concepts for stories… one that came up was a situation where girls were growing en masse, one of the girls loves getting bigger, finds out what is making everyone grow and liberally applies it to herself.

This contrasted with a story I read just last night – Too Much Honey over at mg-sg – where the male lead portions out the growth formula to his girlfriend, who starts out petite and ends up giantess. Naturally, the guy isn't so keen on having his girlfriend get bigger/stronger than him (that's familiar…) so, he's somewhat recalcitrant but naturally, she seduces him and he can't help but give her some.

So, this had me thinking… which is better? Assuming that there's a certain item/substance that prompts growth… should the girls be able to get it themselves? Easily? With difficulty? From a hapless male protagonist.

I feel it makes it more interesting if there's some… conflict in them obtaining the means to grow. Also, if you've got more than one girl involved, it makes things more competitive and strife ridden…

Anyway, I suppose I just wonder what people think?

Conflict is to story what sound is to music.

Someone doing something, easily, with the exact predicted outcome is the definition of a boring story.

I think it's fair to say the law of unintended consequences is mandatory in FTF stories…

The radiation doesn't help the female scientist cure disease, it makes her a hulking creature of superhuman size and strength. That wasn't juice in the refrigerator, it was a vitality formula designed to make a person dramatically grow… that wasn't a wolf that attacked Katie, it was a werewolf and so on.

Basically, anything that can result in transformation, will result in transformation… I suppose it's kind of like watching a standard horror film, the audience is well aware of the various rules that govern the action… the characters are not.

I prefer stories where the female characters are not in complete control of their own growth and don't get psycho from their empowerment.

I have three favorite tangents to this type of storyline (and to the law of unintended consequences).
One is where the nerdy male friend whom secretly causes the growth of the female character(s) underestimates the power of his action thereby causing the girl(s) to grow more than he had intended.
The second is basically the plot of "Compounding Interest" where the girl wants to grow, grows more than intended, but doesn't seem to mind the miscalculation at all and uses it to her advantage without going crazy.
The third fits into PT's question.  It is a combination of one and two where her initial growth is caused secretly by a friend but then the girl finds out and would like a bit more.  The friend is not "hapless" but could be either reluctant or eager to help or out of formula.

Yeah, I don't think it's as fun if the girl can just go off and get growth serum from a drinks dispense… it kind of spoils it.

I was actually thinking of "Compounding Interest" when I wrote the question, as – while it's not really elaborated upon at length – it's clear the female lead goes to some lengths to procure considerable quantities of the medicine.

But I think that there's a certain element of… tedium when it's a case of a girl going to buy a packet of nanites to make her breasts grow to whatever size… I think for it to be fun, there has to be the element of the unknown.
