Still doesn't make it right.
Whenever possible, one should always try to obtain the permission of the author first.
If not, or can’t, then don’t repost it publically.
“I like a good story well told. That is the reason I am sometimes forced to tell them myself.”
~ Mark Twain / Samuel Clemens (1907)
I agree people should try to get the author’s permission before re-posting. Which is why I prefer to post links rather than stories.
That way the authors can see how popular they are, can get feedback, and can control new editions and versions.
It can be reasonably argued it is a good to make copies of non-copyright stories, because there have been a few cases of websites suddenly being lost, and at least one case of an author passing away, so the copies saved the work. But those copies should not be posted on the web without permission.
I’d just like to point out, I’m posting links to sites that I believe are not well known, and links to stories hidden away on well known sites in little known places.
If I think you are a well known author, or are well placed on Brawna or DtV, I figure you get enough traffic already.
This is to help readers find stories that are hard to find.
Other posters are welcome to contribute links their finds too.
If this accidentally turns up some unauthorized re-posts or excessive plagiarism, I’m sure authors would prefer to know about this.

That’s not Selina Kyle. Much as I like the occasional story about known subjects being enhanced, I don’t like when they total discard the character’s “character”.
First, the real Selina never would’ve killed the security guard. For all her mercenary bent, she does have compassion towards “innocents”. She tries to minimize her collateral damage in the course of a theft.
Second, she’s got the hots for Batman and, much as he tries to deny it, he does for her. She would’ve never humiliated him like that. She would put her newfound strength to use in a much more pleasing manner.
