ParticipantMy first exposure was from an issue of Marvel’s late 80’s/early 90’s parody comic “What the-!?” The back cover featured a “charles atlas ad” parody that featured girlfriend Mona signing up with “Charlena” Atlas after bullied boyfriend Mac decides he’s too wimpy to do so himself. Though the ad skips the shot of her admiring her new muscles in the mirror with a front double bicep shot, Mona looks good and is treated positively, except for the final shot when she dumps Mac for the bully she just slugged.
Unfortunately, I lost the comic years ago and can’t find the strip anywhere online. You don’t have to believe me but it did exist. Who else has stories to share?

ParticipantI don’t remember the first, but an early one and an all time favorite was in Uncanny Xmen comic in the 80’s where Lorna Dane(Polaris) had lost her magnetic powers. Somehow(I dont recall how) she ends up getting new powers – strength and added size, along with her clothes fitting much smaller on her and her towering over some guy nearby all out of the blue. I know the muscle growth wasnt big but in my mind it was fantastic. There were also times back then in the same series where Rogue absorbed She Hulk, Juggernaut and a physically muscular and tall black amazon woman, and each time Rogue grew in size and strength. One more of the many reasons I loved X-men back then(still do enjoy modern Xmen but not as much due to all the constant changes of the non good kind).

KeymasterEarly She-Hulk comics did it for me, but at the time I thought I was the only person in the world aroused by the concept.
Once people began posting stories to Usenet in ’93 or ’94, I knew I wasn’t the only one.

ParticipantFor “growth” specifically, the first I can remember is every time Olive Oyl had some of Popeye’s Spinach…she didn’t grow a whole muscular body, but at least her biceps got pumped. Comic-wise, I can remember Ann O’Brien from Douglas Adam’s “Monkeyman and O’Brien” as the first slow and steady muscular growth in…94-95, I think. Since I hardly read superhero comics, She-Hulk was never in my mind.
You know, I’ve always wondered why nobody ever did a parody/homage/rule 63 version of the Charles Atlas’ advert. This small example gives me a slight hope we’ll find a few more of the kind. And damn, they took away the most important vignette: admiring and commenting her new muscles in front of the mirror!

ParticipantYou wouldn’t happen to have issue numbers for those scenes, would you? 🙂

ParticipantThe earliest one I can remember is the Tiny Toons episode “That’s Incredibly Stupid!”, where, as part of a game show, Plucky has to judge a beauty contest, whose contestants suddenly hulk out into massive bodybuilders. I had been exposed to male MG more than a few times before then, but that’s what started me on the FMG path.
