I am neither a veteran nor have had many brushes with people outside the FM community for my work. However, I've heard of many such stories. And as KTM has said, many (if not all) FM artists on dA have had abuse thrown at their work. These include the Japanese artists who don't speak much English but who've decided to make their home there as well. And the fans have done the same thing there as we are doing here, which is give each other support, and understand that FM is not -yet- a generally accepted form of interest in this still patriarchal society. However, FM has grown much since a couple of decades ago, thanks to communities like Amaz0ns.. and we're building quite a contingent at dA too. So the future is looking bright 🙂

Some really helpful info there, Jed-san and fasola-san!

My little 2 cents to add for you, Red, would be to be less critical of your work. Strive to improve, sure, but not so much that it stops you from getting your work out. Bleedman and other professionals, they all started with crabby comics, not the masterpieces we see later. But as time goes by, you could see their style change, and become more refined. Comics is like a marathon, and I think endurance and discipline is just as crucial as the technical skills. So pick a day of the week where you will put up a page of comic, come rain or shine, and keep that up, and you will have won half the battle.

I was inspired by the title, and the colouring you did for one of your experiments. I tried my best to get a similar effect, but hm, I had to use every Photoshop trick I know, which is kind of a cheat. If you had planned to colour this, I'd still very much hope you will, because your colouring is really really reeeeally awesome!!

    Too awesome, Gettar-san!

    Great picture!
(But take care of your hands, man!  We don't want you getting carpal tunnel off that mouse!)

*nods* Definitely take care of those hands. Interestingly, however, I've heard of an artist who had carpal tunnel so he wasn't able to hold a pencil, so he used the mouse and Illustrator instead. That didn't stop him producing amazingly gorgeous artwork. As an aside though, carpal tunnel is quite easily treatable with acupuncture.
