One of the things hurting them is that Star Trek syndication is so expensive.

Another is that they tend not to give decent but expensive shows time to unfold.  I was enjoying the Dresden Files and disappointed when they canceled it.  A little back-seat channel management here.

Also, much as I hate to balk at showing off hot ass-kicking women, what was the deal with Painkiller Jane?  No plot, no idea where it was going, no consistency, no wonder it was booted off right away.  They should do La Femme Nikita re-runs, or Alias if they need some sci-fi flavor to it.

Battlestar Galactica shows sci-fi still has the potential for great television with fantastic ratings, but I think they may be learning the wrong lesson.  It's not good because it's sci-fi, it's good because it has good writing, and that's what the other shows the Sci-Fi Channel is producing these days are missing.

I suppose it depends on what your values are when you say "worth it".  I think, for the most part, people who are that driven and dedicated and go to the Olympics wouldn't have it any other way!  So it is worth it.
