I usually like his articles, but this one is way off base. He says “You may be thinking, steroids are illegal because they’re dangerous! Really? Compared to what? Swallow a bottle of Tylenol and see what happens. Swallow a bottle of Vitamin C and see what happens. Drink three gallons of water in a single sitting and see what happens”. That’s true, but no one has ever said, “My headache is gone, so I’ll take more and be even less headachy”. In bodybuilding, more is more with steroids. The object is to get big, and you do that with PEDs. My brother had to take low to moderate amounts of steroids for seven years due to his intestinal condition. I saw him become more irritable. I saw his face become more acne filled. He called it his “moon face”. Worst of all, the prolonged dosage resulted in sapping the calcium out of his bones. As a result, his back posture got worse and also suffered a fracture rib from a minor trip on a sidewalk curb. He had to stop a lot of exercising because his bone density was getting worse. He’s had surgery for his intestines, been free of daily steroids, and now doing and feeling much better.

But the argument for steroids is still for sport. Well what about those who don’t want to risk their own health with the side effects? What about those who can’t afford them? In the spirit of sport, should athletes who don’t use PED’s have to compete against those who do? He argues that steroids “least for adult men in good health and under the watchful eye of a doctor”. But in a highly competitive sport like bodybuilding, how naive does he have to be that that’ll happen? Athletes will see what the competition is doing and start the game of one-up until something bad happens, then there will be a pause to investigate, and then it’ll start all over again. His article is simply wrong.

One other point. He mentions how abundant steroids are in Mexico and there aren’t any known problems with steroid related homicides and such. If that’s the case, where are the influx of Mexican bodybuilders? Surely if they’re so safe, the number of Mexican athletes across the board should be news making. So where are they?

She may be right, but I found her tone a little too bitter. And because of that, at the end, all that stayed in my mind is this bitterness and maybe a false feeling of jealousy and envy towards those who chose to use enhancing drugs to bypass their genetic limitations.

It took away all the “to be really proud of yourself, make progress by your own means, not by chemical ones” speech.
