Yeah, for its time it was a subversive book as a commentary on British society, the aristocracy and the Royals in particular – concealed within a fantasy story. Lewis Carroll (aka Charles Dodgson) had to do it that way, because unlike the USA which has a 1st Amendment, which protects free expression, the UK has nonesuch.
Frank Baum did something similar w/ his OZ stories (Populist allegory), and also C.S. Lewis w/ his Narnia stories (Christian allegory).
